TRAIN & COMPETE
Since 1990, Special Olympics Ontario Kitchener-Waterloo (SOOKW) provides year-round opportunities in sports training and athlete competition in a variety of sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Sports give our athletes improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self confidence, improved positive self-image, friendships, and increased family support. Today, over 200 athletes participate in Special Olympics Ontario Kitchener-Waterloo sports programs.
For individuals with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics Ontario Kitchener-Waterloo offers life-enriching opportunities to:
- Train in high-quality sports programs with certified coaches.
- Exercise regularly and improve their health, motor skills, and coordination.
- Learn about teamwork and sportsmanship.
- Set athletic and personal goals.
- Increase confidence and self esteem.
- Meet new friends in a fun environment.
- Compete and travel.
Special Olympics Ontario Kitchener-Waterloo welcomes athletes from a wide range of ages, backgrounds, interests, and levels of ability, and provides a range of opportunities that are suitable to diverse needs. SOOKW athletes may choose to train year-round in one or several of the fifteen sports offered. You may choose to participate in SOOKW recreationally, or aim to compete at regional, provincial, national, or world competitions. You may even decide to become a Special Olympics athlete speaker, representative, or program volunteer.
